Unlock New Opportunities with Social Skills Training
Social skills are essential for building meaningful relationships, navigating social situations, and achieving personal growth. For individuals experiencing social skill deficits, such as those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), challenges like interpreting social cues, making eye contact, and engaging in conversations can create barriers to effective communication. These difficulties can affect social behaviour, leading to social impairment and limiting opportunities for positive interactions.
Our Social Skills Program is designed to teach social skills and improve social and emotional development through evidence-based interventions. These programs use techniques such as role-playing, social stories, and group activities to help participants understand social communication, problem-solve in social scenarios, and develop the confidence to navigate complex social interactions. At Family TLC, we aim to foster social intelligence and equip individuals with the skills necessary to thrive in a wide range of social environments.

A Step-by-Step Approach to Social Skills Training Success
To ensure a structured and effective social skills training approach, social skills interventions follow a comprehensive five-phase process. This method is designed to foster the development of essential social communication skills, equipping individuals with the tools they need to navigate social relationships effectively. The framework is tailored to address a wide range of social challenges, whether in children with autism, adolescents with Asperger syndrome, or adults looking to improve social interactions.

Intake Phase
The intake phase lays the foundation by gathering detailed information about the individual’s background, challenges, and goals. This step involves identifying social communication disorders, verbal and nonverbal behaviours, and specific areas requiring attention, such as conversation skills or the ability to problem-solve in social settings. A personalized plan is created to ensure the intervention is effective and relevant to the individual’s needs, whether for children with and without developmental disorders or adults with social communication challenges.
Discovery Phase
The discovery phase focuses on building rapport and exploring the individual’s social strengths and challenges. Through careful assessment, areas such as play skills, changes in routine, or social problem-solving are examined. Trainers may use group settings or individual sessions to observe interactions with others and identify barriers to effective communication. This phase helps an individual uncover the root causes of social difficulties, providing a supportive environment where individuals feel understood and motivated to learn.
Working Phase
The working phase is the heart of the training, where social skills are taught and practiced using evidence-based methods. Role-playing, interventions and instructional methods, and interventions are employed to address complex social skills, such as giving and receiving feedback, understanding verbal and nonverbal cues, and managing social relationships. Training helps individuals acquire life skills and develop the ability to interact confidently in a variety of situations. For example, adolescents with Asperger syndrome may benefit from tailored techniques that enhance their ability to navigate peer interactions.
Check-In Phase
In the check-in phase, progress is evaluated to ensure the training aligns with the individual’s evolving needs. Goals are revisited, and adjustments to the program are made as required to address new challenges. Research has shown that monitoring progress during social skills interventions increases the likelihood of sustained success, making this phase crucial for maintaining momentum and ensuring that skills taught are effectively integrated into everyday life.
Follow-Up Phase
The follow-up phase ensures lasting success by offering continued support after the primary training concludes. These sessions are designed to reinforce learned skills, address ongoing social problems, and foster confidence in real-world applications. Whether through individual coaching or social skills classes, this phase helps individuals sustain positive changes in their social communication skills and continue building meaningful interactions with others.
