Separation: How to Talk to Your Ex

Separation: How to Talk to Your ExTalking to an ex can be incredibly difficult, especially if emotions are still unresolved, children are involved, there is still anger, resentment and sadness about the demise of the relationship, or several of these things are present. Every situation is unique.

Many people try to avoid talking to their ex at all costs, only communicating through email, texts or a neutral third party.

Yet at times it may be important or in fact necessary for you to speak to your ex. You may need to discuss your children’s health, school or schedules. Or how to divide up your assets or other financial issues. Or other pertinent information between the two of you.

Here are some things to keep in mind when communicating with your ex:

  • Try to separate your emotions about your ex from the situation that you are communicating about.
  • Be honest and do not “beat around the bush.” Getting straight to the point will help keep your conversation brief.
  • Be very clear with yourself about what you want to communicate about, and stay on track.
  • Establish boundaries that work for you.

There is no right or wrong way to communicate when a relationship ends, and it can be quite difficult to cope with this new and challenging situation. For extra support, please contact Family TLC.
