Who we help

Counselling for Every Stage of Life

Family TLC is a counselling clinic offering family counselling services and therapy for adults, couples, children and teens. Our registered psychotherapists and registered social workers see clients at our Barrie, Newmarket and Orillia offices and online, so you can get support in the way that suits you.

Adults

“I feel overwhelmed and I’m not coping the way I normally do.”

Individual therapy, including trauma therapy, can help with anxiety and stress, grief and life transitions. Your therapist works with you on what feels hardest right now, at a pace that feels manageable.

Couples

“We keep having the same problems and don’t know how to fix them”

Couples counselling and marriage counselling help partners talk more openly and work through relationship challenges. Family therapy brings everyone into the room when family conflict keeps growing.

Children & Teens

“We are concerned about our child. What can we do as parents?”

Our services for children and teens support young people with big emotions, worry and behavioural changes. Parents get guidance too, so the whole family can move forward together.

Sue Cook RSW

Sue Cook: Leading the Way in Counselling

Founder of Family TLC, Sue Cook has pioneered “The Family TLC Method”, training all our therapists in this unique approach. Her dedication to exceptional client care sets a new standard in the counselling industry. Sue started the practice in 2001 with a simple idea: therapy works best when you and your therapist are partners. That belief still shapes every therapy session, from the first call to the last follow-up. It’s also why each person on the team learns the same method, so you get the same level of care wherever you meet us, in Barrie, Newmarket, Orillia or online.

Trusted since 2001

FAQ

We help individuals and families with the everyday and the hard things in life. That includes anxiety, intrusive thoughts, stress, low mood, low self-esteem, grief, big life changes and support for people who have experienced trauma.

Partners often come to us when relationship conflicts keep repeating or trust has been broken, and they want to improve communication. Parents reach out when a child or teen is struggling with emotions, behaviour or conflict at home.

You don’t need a diagnosis or a clear goal to start. If something is affecting your emotional well-being or your relationships, that’s reason enough to talk to us.

Our team is made up of registered psychotherapists (RP) and registered social workers (RSW), many with a Master of Social Work (MSW). Each one is regulated by their provincial professional college.

Every therapist is trained in the Family TLC Method, so your sessions have a clear structure while still being personal to you. Each one also has their own approach to therapy and areas of experience, including child and youth work.

You can read our therapists’ profiles on the website to see who offers the counselling and psychotherapy you’re looking for. If you’re unsure, our Matching Specialist can suggest someone for you.

Matching starts with a free 20-minute call with our Matching Specialist. She listens to what’s going on and asks what kind of person you’d feel comfortable working with.

She also looks at practical things, like whether you want in-person or online sessions, which office is closest, and which days and times suit your week.

If the first match doesn’t feel right, or you feel stuck after a few sessions, tell us. You can switch therapists, and we’ll help you find a better fit.

No, Family TLC doesn’t have a waitlist. After the free matching consultation, which is no-cost and comes with no obligation, most people can book a first session soon, depending on the therapist and the times they need.

Appointments run Monday to Thursday from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm, Friday from 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, and Saturday from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm.

You can call, fill out the web form, or book with a therapist online. If you call after hours, leave a message and we’ll get back to you the next business day.

Yes, you can choose either. We have offices in Barrie at 160 Bradford Street, in Orillia at 349 West Street North, Unit 2A, and in Newmarket at 17070 Yonge Street.

Online sessions take place over secure video, anywhere in the province. They’re a good option if you live farther away, work long hours or have young kids at home.

Many clients mix both, coming in some weeks and meeting online in others. Your therapist will help you set up whatever works best for you.

Often, yes. Many health insurance plans cover sessions with an RP or RSW. Fees depend on the therapist and the type of service, and our team can go over them with you before you book.

Check your insurance plan before your first session. Look at your yearly limit, which provider types are covered, and whether you need a referral from a healthcare provider. You’ll get a receipt after every session.

If your ability to pay is a concern, ask about reduced-fee sessions with supervised practicum students. Our Matching Specialist can talk through your options when you first call.

Your first session is mostly a conversation. Your therapist will ask what brought you in, what life looks like right now, and what you’d like to be different.

You decide how much to share, and you can go at your own pace. It’s also a good time to ask how your therapist works and what the next few weeks might look like.

Sessions usually last about 50 minutes. By the end of the first one, you’ll usually have a rough plan for next steps, which you and your therapist can adjust as you go.

Next step

Take the next step in whichever way suits you best. Book a free 20-minute matching consultation, give us a call, or choose a therapist online, and we’ll help you get started.
